[note taped to back of photo] The Henry Merchant Ranch—1891 The Merchant Ranch was 22 miles south of Liberal in the Neutral Strip. At the center of the photo is Mrs. Alexander Foltz, mother of Mrs. John King, Liberal. The baby is George Foltz. At the right is Mrs. Henry Merchant. The Pony shown in the photo wasa wild mustang, caught by the cowboys and given to the Merchants. In the 1880’s there were many mustangs in the Oklahoma panhandle country and if caught young enough they made wiry, tough horses. Pony cut off by reproduction ; Palo Duro
