Pride of the Prairie

Date of origin: unknown

[front] PRIDE of the PRAIRIES Engine 35…vintage of 1882…rolled up an incredible mileage in its day and is still in perfect running condition. The little Mail Car is a replica of one in which on July 28, 1862, enroute from West Quincy to St. Joseph, Missouri, over what is now a part of the Burlington main line from Chicago to Kansas City and St. Joseph, United States Mail was first sorted while in transit. The purpose was to speed the departure of the overland stage coach from St. Joseph to California. This was the forerunner of the present-day Railway Mail Service.

[note] Q. Has there ever been a book about Otto Kuhler, artist and designer of railroad engines? Where may I get one?
A. Yes. Kuhler, before his death in 1977, completed his work, My Iron Journey. [My Iron Journey. is underlined] Illustrated with some of his finest oils in full color, it was published by Johnson Publ., Co., Box 990, Boulder, Co. 80306, where it may still be obtained at $18.50. In 1980, his wife Simonne published her story of their romantic and adventurous lives in her book, The Day That Changed My World. [The Day That Changed My World is underlined] Their lives in WW I in Europe, then in the U.S.A., as ranchers and creative people make fine reading.
